Christians Reasons to Homeschool
“For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7)
Needless to say, our children aren't born into the world with perfectly refined minds and hearts. And as Christians, we understand it's worse than that. They're born with minds and hearts bent towards sin. That's why they require wise supervising hands to "train them up in the ways of the Lord" - and that's why God gave them parents.
But when we're not around, there are many others whose aim is to train up our children in their own ways.
Bertrand Russel, a highly-revered philosopher, educator, and atheist of the mid-20th century, wrote:
"I think the subject which will be of most importance politically (over the next 50 years) is Mass Psychology…. It’s importance has been enormously increased by the growth of modern methods of propaganda." It will be used most successfully in the area of public education... “Where all children go to school, and all schools are controlled by the government, the authorities can close the minds of the young to everything contrary to official orthodoxy..."
He continued: "Education should aim at destroying free will, so that, after pupils have left school, they shall be incapable, throughout the rest of their lives, of thinking or acting otherwise than as their schoolmasters would have wished”
-Bertrand Russell, from The Impact of Science on Society (1952)
You may think this was a carefully selected quote that does not truly reflect the general thinking of most educated people in the 1950's, but you would be mistaken.
Bertrand Russel won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1952 for his various literary and philosophical works, and he voiced a theory of education that had been steadily gaining momentum among the educational elite since the early 1900's.
The fruit of this philosophy of psychological manipulation through the public education system came to surface in America in the 1960's, and went into overdrive when the federal government took control of our public schools in the '60's and '70's
THAT'S why they homeschool.
We are instructed in Colossians 2:8: "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ." And in 1 Peter 5:8, we are warned: "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."
Knowing the doctrine of Christianity in the area of psychology – the study of the mind – is vastly important in today's world where we are bombarded daily with abhorrent ideas of all kinds that have great influence over our minds and lives. But it is equally important to be aware of the tactics of the enemy of our souls, who seeks to would take us captive through subtle deception. (Colossians 2:8) Because...
